Develop Your Domestic Goddess Sideby April Braswell
In Mrs. Helen Andelin's classic book from the 1960s, Fascinating Womanhood, she discusses the idea of nurturing and expressing a Domestic Goddess side. Many contemporary women in the post-feminism era read or have heard of this book and they curl their lip at it in disgust. Now, much as I do love this book and find there is MUCH that is useful for modern women, it's the idea of Developing Your Domestic Goddess side that I want to focus on. Indeed, as we are now in a recession, learning to be frugal helps us to build wealth and to build true wealth. Ladies, you can do this!
Now, a lot of modern women, we have developed really GREAT careers. We LOVE our work! We LOVE our job! We LOVE our business!
And we completely neglect our HOME looking, feeling, and being a HOME.
That's our Domestic Goddess side.
She's just a bit like an atrophied neglected muscle group.
We need to warm her up a bit, stretch, and flex her a bit.
Now, I am not suggesting we all race home and become complete Domestic Mavens living only for Home and Hearth, although feel free to do so. Just that in our current age, most of us have room for improvement in this area. We are the generation where both boys and girls took shop and Home Economics completely ceased to be offered. And to have SOMETHING of a Domestic Goddess side to us makes us a more richly nuanced feminine woman, and a Fascinating Lady to men. By developing that and expressing that side and aspect of us as women, we increase our magnetic attractiveness for men to us.
Some areas where you can develop this:
Learn to bake a simple loaf of bread: whole wheat or even a dessert bread like Pumpkin Cranberry bread or Blueberry Bread
Learn to bake homemade muffins, my favorite is Blue Berry muffins, a close second being Bran Muffins with Raisens
Get yourself a cute feminine apron from Ebay so when you hand wash some dishes, you FEEL femmy and look femmy doing so.
Buy yourself a few pairs of rubber gloves to protect your hands from the harsh chemicals and keep them soft (really, men LOVE the contrast with us that we have SOFT hands and pretty nails). I use 1 set in the kitchen and a separate set in the kitchen because of the difference of the chemicals. I'm sure you'll be surprised to hear that I have successfully hunted down and regularly acquire PINK rubber glovies! Yup, and I'm well known online for using my signature Pink Rubber Glovies. I figure, I'm going to have FUN doing this! Of course I would find a way to make it fun!
Learn to do some basic sewing, both hand sewing and some machine sewing.
Have an ironing board, get some spray startch, and iron a blouse periodically. I'm kinda known in my family as the Heavy Startch Queen. Yes, I actually ENJOY ironing (ooop! Can you suddenly hear the stampede of men to my door? A woman who LIKES to iron? Oooo, baby!) and find it very meditative. Who knows, you could become like that, too.
Keep a small garden. Even a small herb garden for your kitchen window sill is an excellent start. Do you HAVE to BUY everything at the store, or could you practice some frugality so you have a little more left each month to put aside for your wealth building?
Develop the Domestic Goddess feminine skill set of Frugality. What are some homemade options you could do or make do with rather than purchasing everything? Reuse your egg shells for composting. While we are pursuing our Atkins and South Beach Diets and eating a lot of eggs, be sure to rinse those eggs shells, let them dry, and then pound them to a pulp and keep them in a clean cottage cheese container. Churned into your soil, these are good for neutralizing acidic soil and replacing the Bone Meal you are purchasing for your roses while you had been throwing out those egg shells. Use them.
OK, that should get some of your creative juices going for thinking up some ideas for developing YOUR Domestic Goddess side. As you think of more yourself, yes, I'd love to hear about them and will be happy to include them in my newsletter.
Part of what a masculine man wants in a feminine woman is indeed her strength and strength of character. And he wants to feel like he CAN satisfy her, that she will not so overconsume that he can never contain her and satisfy her. When we develop our Domestic Goddess side, this helps him to perceive that you are Satisfiable and not DRIVEN by consumption. "Heyyyyyy, I could meet her needs!"
